The Labour Party has suspended its national treasurer, Oluchi Opara, over a rift between her and the party’s national chairman, Julius Abure. This comes after Opara accused Abure of mismanaging the party funds and also requested him to account for the funds earned by the party from the sale of 2023 election forms. The suspension, effective immediately, was announced at a press conference on Wednesday, February 14, at the party secretariat in Abuja. This move represents a new twist in the political drama within the opposition party.

In a recent development, Opara challenged Julius Abure and asked him to account for an alleged N3.5 billion raised from the sale of nomination forms and fundraising activities in the lead-up to the 2023 general election. She also claimed that the Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC) is collaborating with the Edo state government, which is governed by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This led to her suspension by the party’s disciplinary committee, with a minimum suspension of six months.

The decision to sanction Opara was made after she failed to honor an invitation by the party’s NWC to resolve the conflict. Labour Party’s national publicity secretary, Obiora Ifoh, described Opara as a mole who was being used by dissidents in the party. This suspension comes on the heels of Julius Abure terminating the appointments of some of his aides, following a Supreme Court loss. All appointments in connection with the 2023 election and campaigns have been formally terminated.

Amidst the drama within the Labour Party, Hilda Dokubo, a top campaigner of presidential hopeful Peter Obi, criticized the impact of the naira fall. She lamented the unfavourable exchange rates and made a comparison of the naira to dollar exchange rate during the past administrations of Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari.

These recent developments have highlighted the internal challenges and conflicts within the Labour Party, shedding light on the power struggles and tensions among its key chieftains. The decisions and actions taken by the party’s leadership, such as the suspension of Oluchi Opara and the termination of appointments, illustrate the complexities and internal dynamics of the opposition party.

The political landscape in Nigeria continues to be rife with drama and power struggles, with opposition parties like the Labour Party facing internal challenges and conflicts. As the country prepares for the 2023 general election, it remains to be seen how these internal dynamics within political parties will impact the broader political landscape and the electoral process. The unfolding events within the Labour Party serve as a reminder of the complex and multifaceted nature of Nigerian politics.
