The Federal Government has emphasized the importance of public relations experts in shaping the narrative of Nigeria. Vice President Kashim Shettima made this call in Abuja during the inaugural National Spokespersons Summits and Awards organized by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation.
With the theme “Change Narratives, Change Society,” the two-day summit aimed to empower spokespersons to play a pivotal role in changing the perception of the country. Representing the Vice President, Stanley Nwokocha, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, highlighted the role of spokespersons in countering false narratives and promoting accurate information.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also emphasized the importance of citizen communication and engagement, underscoring the need for well-informed citizens. Shettima invited PR professionals to collaborate in crafting the right narratives to transform the Nigerian story and drive societal change.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the summit as a crucial event aimed at revolutionizing communication in Nigeria. He stressed the role of communication professionals in shaping perceptions, disseminating reliable information, and building trust among the public.
Communication plays a vital role in achieving peace, stability, growth, and development in the nation. As technology advances, trust remains a cornerstone for effective communication. Spokespersons are urged to prioritize building trust and restoring hope in their communication strategies.
The President of NIPR, Dr. Ike Neliaku, emphasized that a nation’s reputation is a valuable asset that should be safeguarded. He highlighted NIPR’s unique mandate to drive the process of building and maintaining the nation’s reputation through strategic communication.
Professor Tonie Iredia, the keynote speaker, underscored the importance of a rapid response strategy for addressing critical issues. He warned against allowing misinformation and disinformation to spread unchecked, stressing the need for proactive debunking of false narratives.
