The Independent Hajj Reporters (IHR) has sounded the alarm over the increased demand for refunds from intending pilgrims who had previously deposited their Hajj fare. This surge in refund requests comes in the wake of a sudden hike in the 2024 Hajj fare by N1.9 million. Originally set at N4.9 million by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), the fare was revised upward due to forex fluctuations, leaving approximately 50,000 prospective pilgrims in a state of uncertainty.
IHR National Coordinator, Ibrahim Mohammed, revealed that investigations conducted by IHR members nationwide and discussions with state Hajj officials indicated a growing number of pilgrims seeking refunds. Some individuals are motivated by anger, while others are unable to gather the additional N1.9 million required within the given timeframe.
Moreover, it was discovered that certain pilgrims are considering legal action, as they argue that they had fully paid the initial N4,699 fare announced by the Federal Government through NAHCON within the stipulated period. They are determined to ensure that they are not deprived of the opportunity to participate in the 2024 Hajj, as evidenced by their payment receipts stating “complete payment for 2024 Hajj.”
In light of these developments, IHR cautioned intending pilgrims against making hasty decisions driven by emotions, urging them to wait for a potential positive outcome. The organization emphasized the importance of patience and faith, reminding pilgrims of President Tinubu’s track record of addressing citizens’ concerns.
IHR and similar advocacy groups have been pushing for President Tinubu’s intervention in the matter, highlighting the government’s responsibility to address the grievances of the citizens. It was advised that pilgrims refrain from immediately requesting refunds, as governmental intervention may potentially resolve the situation. The message conveyed was one of trust in Allah’s guidance and the belief that patience and prayer would lead to a favorable resolution.
In conclusion, the situation regarding the 2024 Hajj fare increase has sparked agitation among intending pilgrims, prompting many to seek refunds. However, IHR’s message of patience, faith, and hope for a positive outcome serves as a guiding principle for individuals navigating this challenging period. The organization’s appeal for President Tinubu’s intervention underscores the importance of addressing the concerns of citizens and upholding the rights of prospective pilgrims to fulfill their religious obligations without financial barriers.
