Julius Abure, the national chairman of the Labour Party (LP), was arrested on Wednesday night but was later released by the police on Thursday morning. His release was confirmed in a tweet by the Labour Party, which stated that he was released at about 3.05 am on Thursday, February 22.
The embattled national chairman assured that the Edo state chairman of the Labour Party and the state publicity secretary, who were also arrested with him, would soon be released. Abure further disclosed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) had been causing crises within the Labour Party since the 2023 election, and several frivolous petitions have been written against him.
Abure’s arrest caused quite an uproar, with protests erupting in Benin as a result. The police had claimed that Abure and other party officials were arrested over alleged “conspiracy, brutal assault, attempted murder, armed robbery, grievous harm, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.”
Addressing his supporters after his release, Abure compared his situation to that of freedom fighters around the world, stating that they suffer injustice and persecution in their quest for change. He also mentioned that pressure was mounted on the police for his release, and he assured that the state chairman, publicity secretary, and others arrested with him would soon be released.
The national chairman also spoke out against the APC, accusing them of making life difficult for Nigerians and instigating crises within the Labour Party since the 2023 election. He asserted that several frivolous petitions have been written about him as part of the ongoing struggle within the party.
The release of Abure and his assurance of the release of other party officials came as a relief to their supporters and the broader public. The situation highlighted the tensions and political maneuvering that often accompanies elections and party politics in Nigeria.
Overall, the events surrounding Julius Abure’s arrest and subsequent release served as a reminder of the complexities and power struggles that underpin Nigerian politics. The swift turn of events, from the arrests to the release and the subsequent statements by Abure, shed light on the intricate web of alliances, rivalries, and power dynamics that are at play within the country’s political landscape.
