The Labour Party, LP, in Edo State has made a statement regarding the cost of its expression of interest and nomination forms for the upcoming governorship election. The state chairman of the party, Kelly Ogbaloi, addressed the issue at a press conference in Benin City, emphasizing that the cost of N30 million is the lowest-priced among the three major political parties and should therefore be affordable for any serious aspirant wishing to contest on the party’s platform.

The party’s governorship primary election is scheduled for February 22, 2024, and there has been some contention over the cost of the nomination forms. Last week, 18 governorship aspirants on the platform of the party protested against the N30 million fee, calling on the national leadership to reduce the fees to a range between N1 million and N5 million. They argued that the current fees do not align with the principles and public perception of the party.

In response, Ogbaloi explained that the cost of elections into political offices in Nigeria is quite expensive, as evidenced in the recent general elections. He pointed out that political party funding is a challenge and that the sale of forms is a significant source of funding for political parties. Additionally, aspirants must demonstrate their capability and capacity to fund campaigns and other election requirements in order to run for the governorship election.

Ogbaloi also disclosed that the party has already had two aspirants, one male and one female, purchase the party forms. He urged other aspirants to do the same, emphasizing the need for sacrifice and participation in the exercise. He assured that the party is committed to ensuring a level playing field for all aspirants and the emergence of a credible candidate.

Furthermore, Ogbaloi revealed that the party has reduced the fee for women by 50% to encourage their participation in the governorship election. He also refuted allegations that the party had received N500 million from the state government to feature an inexperienced candidate as its nominee for the election.

The guidelines released by the party’s leadership regarding the governorship election in the state align with the provisions of the Constitution and the Electoral Act, according to Ogbaloi.

Overall, the Labour Party in Edo State is standing by its decision to set the cost of its expression of interest and nomination forms at N30 million, citing the need for adequate funding to fulfill its responsibilities during and after the elections. As the primary election approaches, the party remains committed to ensuring transparency and fairness in the selection of its candidate for the governorship race.
