Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) in Osara, Kogi, under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Abdulrahman Salawu, has adopted a unique approach to ensuring security on its premises. Salawu revealed to the Nigerian Guild of Editors, who were visiting for a Standing Committee Meeting, that the university utilizes local hunters to enhance security in the vicinity.
The decision to involve local hunters has proven to be effective in combating insecurity at the 400-hectare institution, situated in an area previously known for criminal activities. Salawu emphasized that the hunters possess intricate knowledge of the terrain, enabling them to safeguard the premises effectively. These locally sourced guards are trained professionals who collaborate with a private security firm to maintain a secure environment.
Salawu proudly stated that there have been no security incidents at the university, attributing this success to the diligence and expertise of the security team. The university, which initially operated from a site inherited from the state polytechnic, is in the process of developing a new site to accommodate five faculties with nearly completed infrastructures. Plans are underway to establish a Faculty of Medicine by the 2025/2026 academic session, with preliminary programs in nursing, anatomy, physiology, and medical laboratory science slated for initiation in the 2023/2024 academic session, pending regulatory approvals.
Despite having a student population of approximately 3,000 students, the university currently has limited hostel accommodation with only 180 beds. To address this housing shortage, the construction of a 400-bed facility is on the verge of commencement. Additionally, CUSTECH is collaborating with the private sector to attract further investments and facilities to enhance their educational environment.
During the visit, the Nigerian Guild of Editors explored various infrastructure projects completed under the administration of former Governor Yahaya Bello in Kogi State. Eze Anaba, President of NGE, praised the progress made and encouraged the current Governor, Usman Ododo, to build upon the achievements of his predecessor. Notable facilities inspected included the Reference Hospital in Okene, Ganaja flyover, GYB Model Secondary School, Adankolo, and Muhammadu Buhari Civic Centre, Lokoja.
Anaba commended the Reference Hospital for its potential in promoting medical tourism in Nigeria. He lauded the quality of infrastructure and facilities observed, particularly highlighting the advanced medical equipment such as the MRI machine. Anaba urged the residents to utilize these resources, emphasizing the cost-saving benefits they could offer to the nation.
The Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, and the Health Commissioner, Adams Abdulazeez, expressed gratitude to the editors for touring the projects and encouraged them to accurately share their experiences in Kogi State. The visit aimed to showcase the state’s development initiatives and publicize the positive contributions to healthcare and education.
In conclusion, the efforts of CUSTECH and the governance of Kogi State reflect a commitment to enhancing security, infrastructure, and healthcare services. The partnership between the university, local hunters, and private security firms demonstrates a proactive approach to safeguarding the academic community. Through continued collaboration and investments, Kogi State is poised to further develop its educational and healthcare sectors for the benefit of its residents and the nation at large.
