The Edo state lawmakers have taken a significant step by serving the state’s deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, with an impeachment notice. This move came shortly after the former governor of the state, Adams Oshiomhole, raised an alarm. Shaibu, who has been in a longstanding dispute with Governor Godwin Obaseki, was given seven days to respond to the allegations brought against him.
Oshiomhole sounded the alarm on Tuesday as he distanced the All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers from the impeachment process. He clarified that there was no agreement between his camp and the deputy governor, emphasizing that his focus was on the upcoming 2024 governorship election in the state.
The relationship between Governor Obaseki and Deputy Governor Shaibu, both chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo state, has been strained over the authentic governorship candidate of the party. Obaseki supported a Lagos-based lawyer, Asue Ighodalo, as the party’s standard bearer through the indirect primary election at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin. In contrast, Shaibu emerged as a factional candidate in a parallel primary held at his official residence on Commercial Avenue in Benin.
In a related development, Oshiomhole revealed that there were ongoing discussions about impeaching the deputy governor. There were allegations that Governor Obaseki had reached out to him to persuade APC lawmakers to support the impeachment process. However, Oshiomhole clarified that no such agreement existed, and his primary focus was on the upcoming governorship election in 2024.
Meanwhile, in another unfortunate incident in Edo state, two policemen were reportedly beaten to death by youths in the Akoko-Edo local government area. The attack occurred after the officers’ vehicle allegedly hit a motorcycle, resulting in the tragic deaths of the rider, a woman, and a child. Despite being kept in custody by the Edo state security vigilante network, the officers were overpowered and attacked by the youths, leading to the death of two officers and injuries to two others.
In conclusion, the political landscape in Edo state is currently filled with tension and uncertainty, as the impeachment notice served to Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu highlights the ongoing power struggles and internal conflicts within the state. Leaders and stakeholders must work towards finding amicable resolutions to these issues to ensure peace and stability in the region.
