The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has made a plea to the state government to declare a state of emergency on hepatitis and other fatal diseases. This request comes following the tragic death of 28 individuals in Doma Local Government Area of the state. The matter was brought to attention during the House proceedings in Lafia on Monday by Musa Ibrahim (NNPP- Doma South), under a matter of public importance.

The Speaker of the House, Danladi Jatau, extended his gratitude to Mr. Ibrahim and the other members for their contributions to the issue. He emphasized that declaring a state of emergency on hepatitis would be a pivotal step in controlling the spread of diseases and subsequently enhancing the health status of the people of the state. Furthermore, he expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for eternal rest for the departed souls.

The House provided two resolutions as a response to the deaths caused by hepatitis. Firstly, it requested that Gov. Abdullahi Sule direct the Ministry of Health to dispatch their experts to the affected communities. Secondly, it advised that the state government declare a state of emergency on hepatitis and other deadly diseases within the state. The speaker then directed the Clerk of the House to communicate the resolutions to the governor for further necessary action.

Several members of the House, including Muhammad Oyanki, Daniel Ogazi, Ibrahim Akwe, Solomon Akwashiki, and Larry Ven-Bawa expressed their views on the matter. They echoed the need for the government to prioritize the eradication of hepatitis and other deadly diseases, with specific attention to the treatment of hepatitis.

Musa Ibrahim, who sponsored the motion, reported that 28 people in his constituency had died from hepatitis between October 2023 and the present. He stressed the urgency of addressing the issue and urged the government to take immediate action.

To conclude, the House called for swift intervention from the state government to combat the spread of hepatitis and other lethal diseases. The urgency of the situation and the high death toll in Doma Local Government Area signify the critical need for immediate action to prevent further loss of life.

The matter has been communicated to the governor, and it is anticipated that the state government will take appropriate action in response to the resolutions put forward by the House. The gravity of the situation underscores the importance of addressing public health issues to ensure the well-being of the residents of Nasarawa State.
