Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, the brother of the late President Musa Yar’Adua, recently shed light on the controversy surrounding the transfer of power prior to his brother’s passing. In a televised interview with Channels TV, he addressed the misconceptions and clarified that power was indeed transferred to former President Goodluck Jonathan. Despite initial reports suggesting otherwise, Senator Abdulaziz affirmed that his brother had written a letter transferring power to Jonathan before embarking on his medical trip to Saudi Arabia for treatment.
During the interview, Senator Abdulaziz shared his personal experience of being with his brother in Saudi Arabia and monitoring the news from Nigeria. He expressed his initial distress over the reports claiming that power was not transferred and reassured the public that his brother had taken the necessary steps to ensure a smooth transition of power. The lawmaker emphasized that he was close to his late brother and knew him well, which is why he was deeply troubled by the false narratives circulating at the time.
Senator Abdulaziz revealed that he, along with other family members, had cared for his brother during his stay in Saudi Arabia. He mentioned that he saw the reports questioning the power transfer around December 2009 and was determined to investigate the matter. After confirming that his brother had indeed written a letter transferring power to Jonathan, he was relieved to set the record straight.
Despite his knowledge of the letter and the power transfer, Senator Abdulaziz mentioned that as a serving military officer at the time, he refrained from speaking to the press about the matter. He explained that it was not within his jurisdiction to disclose such sensitive information to the public. However, he expressed uncertainty about the fate of the letter and whether Jonathan had received it.
In a separate development, Senator Abdulaziz was appointed as the new leader of the Northern Senators Forum after Senator Abdul Ningi stepped down from the position following a three-month suspension over budget padding allegations. As a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) representing Katsina Central, Senator Abdulaziz now chairs the forum and will lead discussions and initiatives within the group.
The insights shared by Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua have provided clarity on the events leading up to his brother’s passing and the transfer of power to Goodluck Jonathan. His willingness to address the controversy and set the record straight reflects his commitment to transparency and accountability. As he takes on a new leadership role in the Northern Senators Forum, he continues to uphold the values of integrity and diligent service to the Nigerian people.
