The Lagos state government has refuted claims circulating on social media that it was distributing N20,000 as a “Ramadan Support Fund” to the residents of the state. The spokesperson to Governor Sanwo-Olu, Jubril Gawat, dismissed the report on Friday, March 22, emphasizing that there was no such initiative in place.

The message that was circulating stated: “Lagos state N20,000 Ramadan 2024 support fund is ongoing. Due to high levels of inflation, economic hardship, and the high cost of feeding, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved N20,000 support funds in order to ease some of the financial burdens that individuals may face during Ramadan.” The purpose of this alleged fund was to ensure that everyone could fully participate in religious fasting.

Jubril Gawat, the senior special assistant on new media to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, took to Twitter to debunk these claims and clarify the situation. The government’s stance was clear in denying the existence of such a program.

This misinformation emerged at a time when several governors, particularly in the northern region, had declared Ramadan palliatives for the people in their respective states. At least seven state governors in the north were reported to have allocated over N28.3 billion towards feeding their citizens during the fasting period. This significant financial commitment raised questions among critics and religious leaders regarding accountability and the potential for misuse of funds.

While it is commendable to support the less privileged during Ramadan, the call for caution and transparency in the process was evident. The spiritual reward that comes with charitable acts was noted, but ensuring that the allocated funds were used efficiently and effectively was paramount.

Governor Sanwo-Olu of Lagos had previously announced measures to address the economic hardship in the state. Plans included distributing daily food at selected Mama Puts and restaurants, providing free delivery in hospitals, and implementing a 25% reduction in public transport fares for buses, trains, and ferries. These initiatives aimed to alleviate the financial burden faced by residents and provide some relief during challenging times.

Overall, the Lagos state government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in its programs and initiatives remains crucial. As the state continues to navigate various challenges, ensuring that resources are utilized effectively to benefit the people is essential. Misinformation and false claims only serve to create confusion and undermine the government’s efforts to support its citizens during difficult times.
