Long queues on Monday characterized many terminuses of the Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, of Lagos State Government following the slashing of BRT transport fare to ameliorate the suffering of the state residents. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced a 25 per cent rebate on fares charged by BRT and other Lagos State Government-owned transport schemes during a live media chat to inform residents of the steps being taken by his administration to reduce economic hardship in Lagos.

A News Agency of Nigeria correspondent observed long queues at various BRT terminuses, with many commuters eager to board the buses. Some commuters even opted to stand inside buses rather than wait for a seat due to the lengthy queues. The situation was the same at terminuses such as Ayobo, Oshodi, Mile 2, Okokomaiko, Costain, and Ikorodu.

Vivian Mgbemena, a commuter and civil servant, shared her experience at the Oshodi terminus, where she joined the standing queue due to the long queue for seats. She was pleased with the reduced fare from N600 to N450 for the Ayobo to Oshodi route and thanked Sanwo-Olu for the reduction. Another commuter, Miss Ngozi Ejiofor, commended the cut in transport fare for her trip from Okokomaiko to Mile 2 and urged the Lagos State Government to further reduce the fare from the current N300 charged on the route.

Kunle Olowopoju, a businessman, praised the government for the fare cut, describing it as a huge relief. He highlighted the reduction in BRT transport fare from Costain to Ikorodu from N700 to N600. Olowopoju emphasized the need for further reduction in fares to ease the burden on residents facing economic challenges. Benjamin Anibogu, an automobile parts trader at Ladipo Market, also appreciated the reduction in BRT fare, stating that he paid N485 instead of N650 for his trip from Oshodi to JokeAyo. He urged the government to take more steps to alleviate the suffering of Lagos residents amidst rising prices of food and household commodities.

Overall, the reduction in BRT transport fares by the Lagos State Government has been well received by commuters who are facing economic challenges. The initiative to reduce fare aims to ease the burden on residents and improve access to affordable transportation across various routes in Lagos. It is hoped that further efforts will be made to address the economic hardships faced by the residents and ensure a more sustainable transportation system in the state.
