The Police Commissioner of Lagos State, Adegoke Fayoade, recently stated that the command provided water and biscuits to protesters during a nationwide protest carried out by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to prevent anyone from collapsing due to the long distance and hot weather. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, Mr. Fayoade emphasized the importance of ensuring the well-being of the protesters by providing them with strength for a successful protest.

“I provided water and biscuits because I don’t want anyone to collapse on the way. We have to use water to strengthen everybody. That is the least we could do,” he said. Many protesters were seen rushing to receive refreshments being distributed from patrol vehicles by police personnel along the way. Despite the challenging conditions, Mr. Fayoade described the protest as peaceful and highlighted that no one was arrested for any violations during the protest.

The Police Commissioner reassured the public that the command remained committed to the security of lives and properties in Lagos State. He encouraged residents to support the police and other security agencies by providing timely information on crimes. Mr. Fayoade also confirmed that the same level of protection provided during the protest on Tuesday would be maintained for the protest scheduled for Wednesday, with his active participation in the operation.

The NLC had organized the protest to address the high cost of living in the country, attributing the prevailing hardship to the increase in prices of goods and services following the removal of fuel subsidy and the depreciation of the naira. The protest, which took place nationwide, sought to draw attention to the challenges faced by ordinary citizens due to the economic situation in the country.

As the protest unfolded, police personnel distributed water and biscuits to protesters to ensure their well-being during the long trek under hot weather conditions. The gesture was a demonstration of the police command’s commitment to the safety and welfare of all individuals involved in the protest. Mr. Fayoade’s proactive approach to addressing the needs of the protesters contributed to the peaceful conduct of the demonstration, with no reports of arrests or violations during the event.

In conclusion, the partnership between the police and the protesters during the NLC-led protest exemplified a shared commitment to peaceful expression of grievances and the maintenance of law and order. The provision of essential refreshments by the police underscored their dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants, reflecting a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect in the pursuit of a common goal.
