Renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has taken legal action against the President Bola Tinubu-led federal government to compel them to fix the prices of commodities and petroleum products within seven days. The Federal High Court in the Ikoyi area of Lagos has granted a seven-day ultimatum for prices to be fixed following an originating motion filed by Femi Falana.
According to Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa of the Federal High Court, there was no objection to the motion filed to compel the federal government to fix the prices of goods and petroleum products. The court has ruled to grant all the prayers sought for in the motion papers.
The court has ordered the federal government to immediately fix the price of items such as salt, milk, flour, bicycles, their spare parts, as well as petroleum products including petrol, kerosene, and diesel.
Femi Falana had sought the court’s intervention to determine if the government is fulfilling its duty under Section 4 of the Price Control Act, which allows it to set prices for specific goods.
In a related development, Legit.ng had previously reported that President Bola Tinubu-led federal government announced an indefinite suspension of the manufacturing of alcoholic drinks in sachets. The directive, announced by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), stated that the five-year window given to manufacturers has elapsed. NAFDAC argued that the size and affordability of the drinks make them accessible to children and make them vulnerable.
This is not the first time that Femi Falana has taken legal action against the federal government. The renowned human rights activist has a long history of championing human rights and holding the government accountable.
Femi Falana, a senior advocate and human rights activist, has filed the suit before the federal high court in Ikoyi, Lagos. Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa of the court ruled that there was no objection to the motion filed to compel the federal government to fix the price of things.
The court then ordered that the Tinubu-led federal government should immediately fix the price of salt, milk, flour, bicycles, and its spare parts, as well as petroleum products such as the petrol motor spirit (PMS), kerosene, and diesel.
Based on the court ruling, it is clear that the onus is now on the federal government to take the necessary action within the stipulated time frame to fix the prices of essential goods and petroleum products. Failure to do so could lead to further legal consequences.
Whether the federal government will comply with the court’s order or appeal the ruling remains to be seen. However, the seven-day ultimatum issued by the court puts pressure on the government to take swift action in addressing the issue of price control for essential goods and petroleum products.
Femi Falana’s legal prowess and dedication to upholding human rights and justice continue to be instrumental in holding the government accountable and ensuring that the rights of Nigerian citizens are protected. As a seasoned senior advocate and human rights activist, Falana’s efforts in addressing issues such as price control play a crucial role in promoting transparency and accountability within the government.
