Borno State Governor, Prof Babagana Umara Zulum, addressed the challenges his administration faces in distributing food items and other necessities to internally displaced persons (IDPs) and vulnerable residents of the state. One of the major obstacles mentioned by the Governor is the lack of sufficient funds to provide for the needs of these individuals.
During a meeting with IDPs in Mafa LGA who were considering leaving the camp due to food shortages, Governor Zulum expressed his disappointment at the situation. He mentioned the recent protests by some IDPs threatening to return to the bush where Boko Haram terrorists are located if the issue was not addressed promptly. While acknowledging the limitations faced by the state government, Governor Zulum assured the residents that measures were being taken to improve the situation.
Governor Zulum highlighted the substantial financial commitment the Government of Borno State has made in providing for the people over the years. He stated that the government had spent over N40 billion in the past four years on food and non-food items for the residents. Despite these efforts, he acknowledged that no government, whether state or federal, can fully meet the food needs of all citizens, especially in the current economic climate characterized by high inflation and a scarcity of money.
The Governor pointed out that the economic challenges faced in Borno State are not unique and are prevalent across Nigeria. However, he noted a positive development in the security situation, leading to many individuals being able to engage in agricultural activities and support themselves. Governor Zulum commended the IDPs who have taken advantage of agricultural opportunities to provide for their families.
He expressed his gratitude to the federal government for its support in achieving peace in Borno State and reiterated the commitment to maintaining security and development efforts in the region. Governor Zulum stressed the importance of continued progress in development and security, urging against any behavior that may disrupt the peace and stability in the state.
