The Board of Trustees of the Labour Party has announced that it has taken over the affairs of the party following what they described as a charade convention that re-elected Julius Abure as the national chairman. In a statement signed by the chairman, Silvester Ejiofor, the Board stated that their intervention was necessary to prevent any leadership vacuum in the party after the expiration of Mr. Abure’s tenure.
The Board explained that in accordance with the party’s constitution, they stepped in to steer the affairs of the Labour Party to avoid any leadership vacuum. They also mentioned that consultation with major stakeholders in the party would soon take place to communicate the processes for the conduct of an all-inclusive and expansive national convention of the party.
This decision aligns with a Federal High Court consent judgment from March 20, 2018, which recognized the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) as the owner of the Labour Party and mandated the holding of an all-inclusive national convention. The Board further referenced an agreement signed between Julius Abure, the NLC, and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) which was mediated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in June 2022.
Additionally, the Board commended the commitment of the party’s members and candidates and pledged to promptly initiate the processes for the conduct of an all-inclusive and expansive national convention. They praised the contributions and fidelity of party members, including workers, students, youths, market women and men, and promised to reclaim and reposition the party as a platform for the country’s socio-political emancipation.
The all-inclusive national convention will kick off with grassroots congresses at the ward, local government, state, and national levels to ensure that every genuine member of the Labour Party is included. This process will be transparent and open to observation by the Independent National Electoral Commission, media, civil society, security agents, and the general public.
In conclusion, the Board of Trustees of the Labour Party has taken decisive action to assert control over the party’s leadership and pave the way for a more inclusive and transparent national convention. Their commitment to reclaiming and repositioning the Labour Party as a vehicle for the country’s socio-political liberation is a testament to their dedication to democratic principles and the advancement of the party’s ideals.
