The Kogi State Coordinating Office of Livestock Productivity & Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) recently conducted a training session for its staff on Prevention of Sexual Exploitation Abuse and Harassment, as well as Gender Based Violence (GBV) in Lokoja. The training, which was specifically for the Project Implementation Unit of Kogi L-PRES, aimed to demonstrate the project’s commitment to inclusivity and gender equality in its implementation process.

Dr. Olufemi Bolarin, the State Project Coordinator of L-PRES, emphasized the importance of upholding the World Bank’s values of equal rights, opportunities, non-discrimination, and fairness for all. He highlighted that any form of abuse against women is an abuse against humanity and underscored the need for collective efforts to combat Gender Based Violence. Dr. Bolarin recognized the pivotal role women play in nation-building and socioeconomic development, emphasizing the significance of involving them in efforts to enhance livestock production in Kogi State.

Stressing that women are crucial stakeholders in the livestock business, Dr. Bolarin urged Kogi women to actively participate in the project to contribute to food security at both the local and national levels. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Hajiya Lami Zaratu Lawal, commended Kogi L-PRES for its proactive approach towards implementing the project in the state.

Mariam Ademu, the National Gender Based Specialist of L-PRES, reiterated the World Bank’s zero-tolerance policy towards Gender Based Violence, highlighting the training as a means to equip the Project Implementation Unit with the necessary tools to address gender inequality. During her presentation, Ms. Eunice Agbogun, Executive Director of the Challenged Parenthood Network, highlighted various obstacles such as lack of access to land, cultural norms, and societal barriers that hinder women’s participation in livestock farming. She emphasized the empowerment of women as a crucial step towards reducing Gender Based Violence in Nigeria.

The training session served as a valuable opportunity for staff to enhance their understanding of the issues surrounding gender equality, prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse, and Gender Based Violence. By equipping the Project Implementation Unit with the necessary knowledge and skills, L-PRES aims to create a more inclusive and gender-sensitive approach in its efforts to boost livestock productivity in Kogi State.

Overall, the training session underscored the importance of upholding principles of equality, non-discrimination, and inclusivity in all aspects of the project’s implementation. By fostering a culture of respect and gender equality, L-PRES strives to create a more sustainable and prosperous future for women and communities in Kogi State.
