Usman Okai Austin, the House of Representatives candidate for Dekina/Bassa in the 2023 elections, has called for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to declare former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, wanted due to alleged misappropriation of funds. This call came after a freezing order was placed on an account linked to the Kogi State Salary Bailout Account following an ex-parte application filed by the EFCC.

The EFCC alleged that funds suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities were traced to the account in question. The agency moved for the interim forfeiture of the funds to prevent further dissipation. It was revealed that the N20 billion intended for salary payments and running the state government was placed in an interest-yielding account, instead of being used for its designated purpose.

In response, Kingsley Fanwo, the Kogi State Commissioner for Information, defended the government’s use of the funds, stating they were utilized appropriately. However, Usman Okai criticized the shielding of individuals, including Yahaya Bello, at the expense of the welfare of Kogi workers, emphasizing the importance of holding accountable those responsible for mismanagement.

Yahaya Bello was named in an ongoing corruption case by the EFCC, although formal charges have not been brought against him. His nephew and an associate were accused of diverting funds belonging to Kogi State, with new allegations claiming they conspired to convert a substantial sum of money for personal use. Usman Okai encouraged support for the EFCC’s efforts to bring the former governor to justice.

Expressing concern over the perceived delay in declaring Bello wanted, Okai questioned the integrity of the EFCC and urged for swift action to ensure accountability and transparency in governance. He highlighted the significance of upholding fiduciary responsibilities and enforcing the rule of law, especially in cases involving misappropriation of public funds.

Emphasizing the need for collective action and vigilance, Okai called on citizens to unite in demanding transparency and accountability from leaders. He underscored the critical role of citizens in safeguarding public resources and ensuring that those responsible for financial misconduct are held accountable. The future well-being of Kogi State, according to Okai, hinges on the integrity of its leaders and the diligence of its citizens in upholding good governance practices.

In conclusion, Usman Okai reiterated the importance of standing together in the pursuit of justice, urging citizens to remain vigilant and resolute in preventing unchecked misappropriation of state funds. He called for a united front in holding accountable those entrusted with public resources and emphasized the timeliness of taking action to uphold the principles of good governance and fiscal probity.
