Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi recently highlighted the need for a review of the federal revenue sharing formula to better align with the democratic needs of citizens. In a statement to the press in Abuja, he emphasized the importance of addressing the current imbalance in the distribution of funds between the federal government and state governments. According to Governor Idris, the existing formula, which allocates 55% to the federal government and lesser percentages to states and local governments, is unfair and hinders the ability of states to fulfill their campaign promises to the people.

Idris stressed the crucial role played by states and local governments in directly addressing the needs and challenges faced by citizens on a daily basis. He argued that these entities are often the closest to the people and bear the brunt of providing essential services and support to the population. As such, he advocated for a more equitable distribution of revenue to enable states and local governments to effectively meet the aspirations and yearnings of the Nigerian people.

The current revenue sharing formula, as determined by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, designates 52.68% to the Federal Government, 26.72% to State Governments, and 20.60% to Local Governments. While the goal of revenue allocation is to foster economic growth, minimize inter-governmental tensions, and promote national unity, Governor Idris emphasized the need for a fairer distribution that reflects the responsibilities and direct interactions states and local governments have with the populace.

In addition to calling for a review of the revenue sharing formula, Governor Idris also addressed the issue of establishing state police forces across the country. While he expressed support for the idea in principle, he urged caution in rushing to implement such a significant change without thorough analysis and consideration of its long-term viability. He highlighted the importance of adequately assessing the practicality and financial implications of setting up state police forces to ensure their effectiveness in enhancing security and combating crime.

The potential benefits of state police include a better understanding of local contexts, improved responsiveness to community needs, and enhanced security measures tailored to specific regions. Some states have already taken steps to establish community security outfits, particularly in regions facing significant security challenges. Governor Idris emphasized the need to carefully assess the financial capacity of states to sustain and support state police forces, including the procurement of equipment, personnel welfare, and logistical requirements.

As discussions around revenue sharing and the establishment of state police continue, Governor Idris highlighted the importance of striking a balance between empowering states to address local issues effectively and ensuring the sustainability and efficiency of proposed reforms. By promoting a more equitable distribution of resources and carefully evaluating the implementation of new security measures, Governor Idris aims to enhance governance and improve the quality of life for all Nigerians.
