The Katsina State Government has addressed the recent resurgence of banditry in eight local government areas. Deputy Governor Faruk Lawal stated at a press conference in Katsina that the criminal activities were a desperate move by the bandits who have been under intense pressure from security forces. He explained that the bandits have been restricted to only eight of the 22 local government areas where they were previously operating.
Lawal emphasized that the bandits have resorted to attacking villages in large numbers as a show of strength, but assured the people of Katsina state that the days of the bandits are numbered. He affirmed that the current security operations will continue with greater intensity. Lawal also reported a recent encounter between security operatives and the bandits in Burdugau forest, where many of the bandits were killed.
According to Lawal, when the administration took office in May 2023, 22 out of the 34 local government areas in the state were affected by insecurity. However, due to sustained government commitment and the efforts of security agencies, there is now relative peace with the exception of the frontline local governments – Jibia, Batsari, Danmusa, Kankara, Faskari, Sabuwa, Dandume, and Safana LGAs, which share borders with Rugu forest.
Furthermore, Lawal disclosed that more than 50 abducted persons have been freed by the security forces, and the fight against the bandits will continue until peace is restored in all the frontline local governments. He urged residents to report individuals selling pre-registered SIM cards, or supplying food, fuel, and ammunition to the criminals, as these activities aid the bandits in their criminal acts.
Lawal stressed the importance of timely and accurate information about criminal activities to ensure a prompt response by the government and security operatives. He also warned the public to refrain from purchasing or selling pre-registered SIM cards, as it is an offense to do so, and anyone caught engaging in such activities will be held responsible.
In conclusion, Lawal urged residents to be vigilant and provide necessary support to the government and security agencies in the fight against banditry. The state government is committed to restoring peace and security to all areas affected by criminal activities. The continuous efforts of the government and security forces are aimed at bringing an end to the menace of banditry in the state.
