The Kano State Hospitals Management Board took a decisive action by dismissing three medical staff members from Kabo General Hospital for allegedly engaging in extortion. Additionally, the board suspended the hospital’s accountant, auditor, and head of the laboratory for selling HIV testing kits that were not meant for sale. The announcement of these decisions was made by the Executive Secretary of the Board, Dr. Mansur Nagoda, following an unscheduled inspection visit to the facility.

In a statement released by Samira Sulaiman, the board’s spokesperson, it was mentioned that Dr. Nagoda, accompanied by Dr. Muhammad Abbas, the Director General of Kano Centre for Disease Control (KNCDC), and Dr. Usman Bashir, the Director General of SAKA, expressed dissatisfaction with the condition of the public facility during the visit.

Dr. Nagoda revealed that the dismissed X-ray unit staff members were found charging patients N12,000 for a procedure that was officially approved for N2,000. This unethical practice led to innocent patients being coerced into paying the inflated charges without receiving any proof of payment.

Furthermore, the statement highlighted that this misconduct resulted in many patients being turned away, causing the facility to perform less than 10 X-rays per week despite having two fully functional X-ray machines. The suspended accountant, auditor, and head of the laboratory were instructed to report to the board’s headquarters for further disciplinary actions.

Dr. Nagoda emphasized that these actions were taken to serve as a warning to others and uphold the oath of office taken to sanitize the health system. He stressed the importance of maintaining integrity in the healthcare sector and ensuring that patients receive proper care without being exploited.

The board’s commitment to eradicating corruption and misconduct in the healthcare system was evident in their swift response to the reported incidents at Kabo General Hospital. By holding accountable those involved in extortion and unethical practices, the board aims to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in the delivery of healthcare services to the people of Kano State.

Patients and the public at large can be assured that the Kano State Hospitals Management Board is dedicated to enforcing ethical conduct and ensuring that healthcare facilities operate in a transparent and patient-centered manner. The dismissal and suspension of staff members involved in extortion and illegal practices serve as a strong message that such behavior will not be tolerated, and those responsible will face appropriate disciplinary measures.
