The Kano State Government has issued a directive barring the five emirs in the state from conferring or upgrading traditional titles within their emirates. This decision, as stated by the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ibrahim Kabara, is due to certain exigencies at the moment. The government has instructed all the Emirs in Kano State to suspend any planned activities related to conferring or upgrading traditional titles until further notice.
The letter, titled “Conferment/Upgrading of Traditional Titles,” emphasizes the need for timely clearance and approval from the office of the Honourable Commissioner, Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, for any such programs in the future. This directive applies to all the Emirs in Kano, including those in Kano, Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye emirates. It is aimed at ensuring that all traditional title-related activities are in line with government regulations and procedures.
This decision comes at a time when there are growing calls from various groups for the dissolution of the new emirates that were created during the tenure of the immediate-past governor, Abdullahi Ganduje. These groups are also advocating for the reinstatement of the deposed Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, who was removed from office during Governor Ganduje’s administration.
The dynamics of traditional leadership and governance in Kano State have been undergoing significant changes in recent years, leading to debates and controversies within the state. The government’s directive to suspend traditional title-related activities reflects a need to streamline and regulate such processes to ensure transparency and adherence to established protocols.
It is essential for traditional institutions to maintain their relevance and integrity while also respecting the authority and directives of the government. By seeking approval and clearance for traditional title-related activities, the emirs can ensure that their actions are aligned with governmental policies and guidelines.
The decision to suspend conferment and upgrading of traditional titles in Kano State underscores the importance of collaboration and cooperation between traditional leaders and government authorities. It also highlights the need for transparency and accountability in traditional governance processes to uphold the sanctity and credibility of traditional institutions.
As the situation continues to evolve, it is crucial for all stakeholders, including traditional leaders, government officials, and the general public, to engage in constructive dialogue and cooperation to address any challenges and concerns affecting traditional governance in Kano State. By working together, stakeholders can contribute to the preservation and advancement of the rich cultural heritage and traditions that define the state’s identity.
