The Supreme Court’s ruling on the legal dispute over the Kaduna State governorship seat marked the end of a ten-month battle which resolved any lingering uncertainties about the leadership in Kaduna State. Governor Uba Sani extended an invitation to the PDP candidate, Isa Ashiru, to join forces with his administration and work towards uplifting Kaduna State to new levels of success. Governor Sani made this call during an appearance on Channels TV’s flagship program, ‘Politics Today’. He praised Ashiru’s conduct and invited him and other citizens of Kaduna State to come together and work for the progress of the state.
After emerging victorious in the election with 730,002 votes, Governor Sani surpassed his closest competitor, Ashiru, who garnered 719,196 votes. Jonathan Asake of the Labour Party secured the third position with 58,283 votes, while Suleiman Hunkuyi, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) candidate received 21,405 votes. Governor Sani commended Ashiru’s sportsmanship for engaging in the legal process and approaching the judiciary when dissatisfied with the election outcome, saying that his conduct upheld democratic principles and the rule of law. He expressed his appreciation for Ashiru’s commitment to the legal process, which included pursuing the case from the tribunal to the Court of Appeal and ultimately to the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court’s unanimous affirmation of Governor Sani’s victory brought the legal battle to a conclusion, which he described as a commendable testament to the role of democracy. He thanked Ashiru for embracing the legal process and commended the judiciary for their sound judgment. In doing so, he extended an olive branch to Ashiru and expressed a desire for collaboration to move Kaduna State forward.
