The Labour Party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, has been in the spotlight following allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement. The party, however, has refuted these claims, asserting that Abure did not misappropriate any funds belonging to the LP.
The national publicity secretary of the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, confirmed this update in a statement issued on Monday, February 12. In the statement, the Labour Party claimed that the party’s national chairman, Julius Abure, did not take any funds belonging to LP as alleged by the treasurer, Oluchi Oparah.
Oparah had requested transparency from Abure regarding the party’s financial affairs, as reported by The Nation. She claimed that Abure misappropriated over N3.5 billion derived from the sales of forms and other fundraising activities for the 2023 general elections, causing her to be unable to fulfill her legally mandated duty of managing the party’s finances due to the actions of the national chairman.
However, the party, in response to these allegations, stated that the National Treasurer was “certainly under some external influences” when she raised the allegations of embezzlement against the National Chairman. Furthermore, the Labour Party also clarified that apart from the National Treasurer, no other member of the national working committee had raised any issues of embezzlement against the National Chairman, and that she had not provided evidence to corroborate her claims.
The party further dismissed Oparah’s claims as being drafted by the party’s detractors with the intent to tarnish the image of the party. In addition, the Labour Party also highlighted the absence of any record of the party accounts during Oparah’s tenure as National Treasurer, raising doubts about the credibility of her allegations.
The Labour Party expressed its proactive approach towards the 2023 general election, indicating that the party presented a presidential candidate for the first time. This implies that the party under the leadership of Julius Abure continues to focus on its activities in preparation for the upcoming elections.
Furthermore, in a separate development reported by Legit.ng, Julius Abure had terminated the appointments of some of his aides after the party’s loss at the Supreme Court. The termination letter, signed by Malam Umar Farouk, the national secretary of the Labour Party, indicated that all appointments in connection with the 2023 election and campaigns had been formally terminated.
In conclusion, the Labour Party has reiterated its position that its national chairman, Julius Abure, is free from every wrongdoing and financial allegations. The party’s leadership maintains that it remains focused on its activities and preparations for the upcoming 2023 general elections. It appears that this issue has stirred significant controversy within the party, leading to widespread speculation and contrasting claims surrounding the finances and leadership of the Labour Party.
