The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it will not be hiring new ad-hoc staff for the upcoming February 3 rerun and bye-elections in Nigeria. Mrs. Mary Nkem, the director of the voter education and publicity department of INEC, conveyed this decision to journalists on Wednesday, January 24. She emphasized that the commission will be utilizing its current staff for the impending elections. This implies that there will be no new recruitment for temporary staff to support these important electoral processes.
Nkem declared that INEC’s permanent members of staff in the affected states will be deployed to oversee the conduct of the elections. She added that if there is a shortage of staff in any state for certain categories, members of staff from nearby states will be utilized. For the role of presiding officers (POs) and assistant presiding officers (APOs), the commission plans to leverage the services of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving within the state.
These elections are significant appendices of the 2023 general elections, and thus, it is crucial for INEC to ensure that they are conducted effectively and efficiently. Nkem emphasized that the main method of staff deployment will be through existing INEC personnel, stating, “We are not opening any portal for recruitment of ad hoc because we are not taking new ad hoc staff.”
In a related piece of news, Legit.ng reported that INEC has cautioned Nigerians against selling their permanent voter cards (PVCs). With the upcoming 2023 polls, INEC has advised citizens to hold onto their PVCs and not engage in any form of sale because they are the only legitimate tool for voting according to the law. This underscores the importance of conducting fair and credible elections and the readiness of INEC to manage these crucial electoral activities with the available resources and personnel.
