The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election in Edo state has sparked controversy, with one of the top aspirants, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, expressing his dissatisfaction with the outcome and threatening legal action. Hon. Idahosa and his supporters gathered in front of the APC headquarters in Abuja to challenge the election results.
Initially declared the winner of the primary election by Imo State governor Hope Uzodimma, Hon. Idahosa now plans to take legal action if justice is not served. He led a protest at the party’s national headquarters, calling for fairness and urging President Bola Tinubu to intervene to ensure that the National Working Committee (NWC) upholds fairness.
In a statement to reporters outside the APC National Secretariat, Hon. Idahosa revealed that he had submitted a formal complaint to the APC Governorship Appeal Committee. He emphasized his intention to follow the due process before considering legal action to defend his rights within the party.
“I am not here to make trouble, I am a lawmaker, but one thing we want is justice. Today, I might be a young man, but it might be the children of NWC members tomorrow. We have to do the right thing, if we continue to do what is wrong as a country, we are not going to move forward. So I am calling on Mr. President to call NWC to order,” Hon. Idahosa stated.
Accompanied by Barrister Bernard Ekun, a lawyer and prominent party member from Edo State, Hon. Idahosa and other party members highlighted the intricacies of the APC primaries. They alleged that the party was deliberately trying to prevent the APC from fielding a candidate for the election by declaring the election inconclusive without proper adherence to election procedures.
Furthermore, in a separate development, Olumide Akpata, the ex-chair of the NBA, emerged as the Labour Party’s governorship candidate in Edo state. This comes after the APC selected Monday Okpebholo and the PDP announced two candidates for the upcoming election. Akpata denied claims of being backed by Edo’s PDP Governor Godwin Obaseki.
The situation in Edo state remains tense as Hon. Dennis Idahosa and his supporters continue to demand justice and fairness in the APC governorship primary election. With the threat of legal action looming, all eyes are on the party leadership and President Bola Tinubu to intervene and ensure a transparent and fair process for all aspirants. As the political drama unfolds, the fate of the APC in Edo state hangs in the balance.
