Reno Omokri, a key figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called upon the Nigerian government to “immediately cancel all legal mining permits” in the wake of a deadly explosion in Ibadan, which claimed the lives of several people and destroyed homes. Furthermore, Omokri demanded that those responsible for the explosion be identified and held accountable.
Omokri’s comments transpired after the incident in Ibadan which resulted in the deaths of at least three people and the injury of numerous others. Oyo state governor, Seyi Makinde, pointed the finger at illegal miners, attributing the explosion to their activities. Omokri emphasized the need for the federal government to retract all legal mining permits and have legitimate holders reapply under strict conditions, while also cracking down heavily on illegal miners by confiscating their physical and financial assets and redistributing them to the federal government for reconstruction purposes. In addition, he called for the National Emergency Management Agency to provide relief to affected Nigerian citizens and urged the federal government to apprehend those directly responsible for the explosion.
Omokri’s statements echo in the wake of governor Makinde disclosing that a mining company indicted for the explosion was owned by individuals with foreign names, while tragically acknowledging that the death toll had risen to three. Furthermore, Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), posed eight pertinent questions regarding the Ibadan explosion and urged Governor Makinde and relevant Nigerian security agencies to address them.
In conclusion, it is evident that the Ibadan explosion has stirred a plethora of reactions and calls for action from various political figures and activists. The gravity of the situation and its implications for the safety and security of Nigerian citizens are of paramount concern, prompting demands for stringent measures to address the causes of the tragedy and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
