Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Kwara state took to the streets on Tuesday in a peaceful protest to draw attention to the economic hardships faced by Nigerians, especially workers, in the country. The protest, which started at the Labour House in Ilorin and made its way through major roads and streets in the city, culminated at the Governor’s Office where the workers were addressed by Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim, the permanent secretary of Establishment and Training.

Carrying placards and chanting songs condemning government economic policies, the protesters voiced their concerns about the severe hardships faced by families in the country due to these policies. The chairman of the NLC in Kwara state, Comrade Murtala Olayinka, highlighted the dire situation faced by Nigerian workers, stating that they were struggling to make ends meet.

Olayinka emphasized the increasing cost of living in Nigeria, lamenting that every item seems to be getting more expensive by the minute. He called on the government to reevaluate its economic and security measures, noting the alarming rate of insecurity in the country. The labour leader also urged the Federal Government to take steps to strengthen the value of the Naira and questioned the dependence on a weakening dollar.

Expressing hope for a positive outcome, Olayinka stated that the two-day protest was a call for the government to engage in negotiations for the betterment of workers’ welfare. He emphasized the need for dialogue, stakeholder meetings, and solutions to the current economic challenges faced by Nigerians. The goal, he stressed, was for the common man to live happily in the country, without the need for further action from organised labour against the government.

The protest served as a platform for Nigerian workers to voice their concerns and demand accountability from the government in addressing the economic difficulties faced by the populace. By coming together in unity, the NLC members in Kwara state demonstrated their commitment to advocating for the rights and well-being of workers across the country.

In conclusion, the NLC’s peaceful protest in Kwara state highlighted the urgent need for government intervention to alleviate the economic hardships faced by Nigerians. Through dialogue and negotiations, the hope is that collaborative efforts can lead to solutions that will improve the lives of workers and promote a more prosperous and stable future for all citizens.
