The Nigeria Civil Society Forum has accused governors of sabotaging efforts by the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration to mitigate economic challenges in the country. The group made this allegation at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday.
During the briefing, National Convener of the Forum, Dr. Godwin Abutu, alleged that governors were paying lip service to the economic pains of citizens in their respective domains. He pointed out that despite the removal of fuel subsidy and the allocation of 30 billion Naira to subsidize food items, governors were not taking advantage of these policies to bring development to their people.
Dr. Abutu criticized the attitude of state Governors, stating that they were sabotaging the system by doing nothing to alleviate the economic difficulties faced by their citizens. He also highlighted the fact that some state governments were still owing workers salaries and arrears, despite the additional revenue generated by the removal of fuel subsidy.
The group expressed disappointment in the distribution of palliatives, stating that they were allocated in December were distributed among cronies instead of reaching the masses as planned. They also called on the organized Labour to drop their idea of a warning strike and seek collaboration with the federal government to address the challenges thrown up by the fuel subsidy removal and floating of the Naira.
The Nigeria Civil Society Forum emphasized the need for all citizens to rise to the occasion and not fall prey to threats made by various groups. They urged the leadership of NLC/TUC to come to the round table and work towards curbing hunger, stabilizing the currency, and securing the people. The group also warned that the warning strike proposed by NLC/TUC would not provide a solution to the present predicament but would only satisfy their ego and serve the interests of their sponsors.
The Forum highlighted the importance of unity and cooperation in the face of threats to national stability and development. They stressed the need for all citizens to work together to counteract any efforts to sabotage the country’s progress.
Overall, the Nigeria Civil Society Forum called for collaborative efforts among all stakeholders to address economic challenges and ensure the welfare of the citizens. They highlighted the importance of responsible governance and urged state governors to prioritize the needs of their people and take advantage of policies aimed at improving the lives of the citizens.
