Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf of Kano State recently made a plea to President Bola Tinubu to consider reopening land borders in order to boost food security in Nigeria. This appeal was made during a visit by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, to Kano.
During the visit, Governor Kabir-Yusuf highlighted the current harsh economic conditions faced by Nigerians and emphasized that reopening the borders could help alleviate inflation and reduce the prices of food items. He expressed appreciation for the president’s intervention in the national food initiative and noted that Kano was selected as the host for the initiative. The governor believed that the program, once launched, would help mitigate the effects of food scarcity in the country.
Governor Kabir-Yusuf also stressed the importance of the Federal Government reopening the borders to allow for the free importation of commodities. He believed that this immediate intervention would make food more accessible and affordable to the population.
In addition to advocating for the reopening of borders, the governor commended the Customs’ food distribution scheme and called for proactive measures to prevent the diversion of commodities. He pledged continued support to the Customs Service to help them effectively carry out their mandate.
On the other hand, Mr. Adeniyi, the Comptroller-General of Customs, emphasized the need for collaboration between the Service and the Kano community. He expressed the NCS’s dedication to fostering deeper collaboration and understanding with stakeholders. Mr. Adeniyi also interacted with members of the business community and other stakeholders in Kano, reaffirming the Customs’ commitment to addressing food insecurity and hardship in the country.
As the discussion continued, both parties discussed policies aimed at refining business processes and enhancing engagement with stakeholders. Governor Kabir-Yusuf and Mr. Adeniyi reiterated their commitment to working together to improve food security and alleviate economic challenges in Nigeria.
In conclusion, the call for reopening land borders to enhance food security in the country is a significant step towards tackling food scarcity and inflation. By collaborating with stakeholders and implementing effective policies, the government and Customs Service can work together to ensure a more sustainable and secure food supply chain for Nigerians.
