Former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, has called for an investigation into the malfunction of the result viewing portal (IReV) during the 2023 elections. Jega made this statement on Friday, January 26, during an appearance on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande on Channels Television. The 67-year-old former electoral umpire blamed desperate politicians for the glitch, suggesting that despite INEC’s efforts, there may have been interference from desperate politicians within the IReV system.
On February 25, 2023, the commission faced difficulties uploading presidential election results promptly on the portal, in violation of section 60 of the Electoral Act 2022. The manual collation of results and the announcement of winners sparked protests from political parties.
Jega emphasized the need for a thorough public inquiry about the IReV, expressing his belief that some reckless politicians may have infiltrated and truncated it, but INEC will take the blame for that. He highlighted the importance of INEC telling the public more about what happened with the IReV, pointing out that something has happened, despite the confidence and articulate manner the INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, had spoken about the IReV, indicating that it then failed.
After resolving the court cases, Jega insists that INEC must thoroughly investigate the IReV issues. In another report, Jega provided his candid thoughts about the 2023 general elections, acknowledging that the elections across the 36 states were credible in many substantial aspects. He attributed severe challenges to politicians and emphasized that they should be blamed for those areas.
Jega’s call for an investigation into the IReV malfunction during the 2023 elections is a significant indication of the need for transparency and accountability in the electoral process, highlighting the importance of ensuring that elections are free, fair, and credible. his perspective on the issue is crucial in moving towards a more transparent and reliable electoral system in Nigeria.
