Former Oyo State Governor, Rashidi Ladoja, has clarified that there is no controversy regarding the successor of the late Oba Lekan Balogun, the Olubadan of Ibadanland. This clarification came during Ladoja’s visit to the palace of the Olubadan designate immediately after the passing of Oba Lekan Balogun, which was announced by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.

Rashidi Ladoja, who is also the Osi Olubadan of Ibadanland, stated that the people of Ibadan are already aware of who will succeed Oba Lekan Balogun as the next Olubadan. This affirmation was made following a private meeting of the Olubadan-in-Council at the Alalubosa residence of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, where it was confirmed that the city has designated its next Olubadan.

According to Ladoja, the next monarch will come from the Balogun line, as the departed monarch, Oba Balogun, came from the Otun line. This succession process aligns with the traditions of Ibadan, where the next in line is referred to as the designate. The decision on the successor was made after discussions on the burial rites for the deceased and plans for a befitting burial ceremony.

The burial rites for Oba Lekan Balogun, a Muslim, were to be conducted in accordance with Islamic customs, with the burial scheduled to take place at Aliwo, his ancestral home. There would be a lying-in-state at Mapo hall before the burial, followed by a prayer for the monarch. While no date was set for the coronation of the new Olubadan, it was mentioned that it would be announced after the completion of the burial rites for the deceased.

The confirmation of Owolabi Olakulehin as the next Olubadan of Ibadan was a significant development in the traditional succession process of the city. This decision reflects the adherence to established customs and lineage for the monarchs of Ibadanland.

In the midst of mourning the loss of Oba Lekan Balogun, the city of Ibadan is preparing for the transition to a new Olubadan, ensuring a smooth succession process and continuation of the rich cultural heritage of the region.

As the community comes together to honor the memory of Oba Lekan Balogun and prepare for the coronation of the new Olubadan, the legacy of past monarchs and the traditions of Ibadanland continue to shape the future of the city.

Overall, the process of succession for the Olubadan of Ibadanland exemplifies the deep-rooted customs and traditions that guide the governance and leadership of the region, ensuring a seamless transfer of power and continuity for future generations.
