The federal government has announced the postponement of the launch of the Port Harcourt-Aba train service to April from the previously scheduled start date at the end of March. The Minister of Transportation, Saidu Alkali, revealed this to reporters after inspecting the reconstructed railway tracks in Port Harcourt on Friday. Mr. Alkali expressed disappointment over the delay and emphasized that the contractor had assured the project would be completed in April.

“This is my second time visiting Port Harcourt to inspect the progress of the Port Harcourt-Aba railway line since assuming office as the Minister of Transportation,” Mr. Alkali stated. He mentioned that the contractor initially committed to a March start date but, during track inspections, some observations were made that necessitated pushing the start date to April. The contractor has now promised an April launch for the Port Harcourt to Aba railway services.

Measures are also being taken to connect both Port Harcourt and Onne seaports to the Port Harcourt to Aba rail track. Mr. Alkali expressed dissatisfaction with the contractor’s failure to meet the agreed deadline, stating, “The contractor promised delivery of the project by March, but if they can deliver it in April, then I think we can manage that.” He explained that the focus has shifted to linking the rail line to Port Harcourt and Onne Ports after starting with the 15% component in fixing the Port Harcourt to Aba rail section.

Assuring of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to completing all ongoing projects across the country, Mr. Alkali mentioned the ongoing efforts to finalize project financing for the Calabar-Enugu-Abuja gauge rail line awarded by the previous administration. He added, “We are currently making all arrangements for the finances, and as soon as the finance is ready, the project will commence.” The government is dedicated to delivering all projects in all parts of the country.

Work on the Ibadan to Abuja standard gauge rail line is progressing, and Mr. Alkali urged the public to be patient and support the successful delivery of the project. He emphasized the government’s commitment to completing infrastructure projects and ensuring efficient transportation networks throughout the country.

In conclusion, the government is taking proactive steps to address delays in the Port Harcourt-Aba train service launch, prioritize project completion, and ensure the connectivity of key ports to the railway network. With ongoing efforts to secure project financing for major rail lines and a commitment to infrastructure development, the government aims to enhance transportation accessibility and efficiency across Nigeria.
