The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has reiterated its stance on the impounding and crushing of all commercial motorcycles in the city. Deborah Osho, Head of Operations at the Directorate of Road Transport Services, FCTA, made this clear during a recent clampdown operation on commercial motorcycle operators in Abuja. The operation was carried out in accordance with the existing law that prohibits the operations of commercial motorcycles in the city.

Mrs. Osho emphasized that the continuous operation of commercial motorcycles in the FCT has escalated from mere traffic violations to posing serious security threats. This prompted the government’s intervention to address the activities of commercial motorcyclists. She highlighted that there is a standing ban on the operation of commercial motorcycles in the city, and the enforcement of this ban is crucial for maintaining security and safety.

“We have just impounded some of them, and we are going to crush them for security reasons,” Mrs. Osho stated. She urged operators not to venture into the city but instead operate in approved areas in the suburbs and rural areas. The message was clear that commercial motorcycle operators are not welcome in the city, and those found in violation of the ban will face consequences.

Dr. Peter Olumuji, Secretary of the Command and Control Centre at FCTA Department of Security Services, also spoke on the operation, emphasizing its importance in curbing criminal activities in the city. Recent arrests of kidnapping suspects revealed the use of commercial motorcycles for quick escapes after committing crimes. Dr. Olumuji stressed that crushing the impounded motorcycles would enhance the enforcement of the ban and improve the security and safety of residents.

The operation targeted major highways in the city, including Kubwa, Airport Road, Apo, and Lokogoma. However, some Abuja residents have expressed opposition to the continuous crushing of impounded motorcycles. They suggested that instead of destruction, stiffer fines or auctioning of the motorcycles could be considered for use in areas where their operations are not prohibited. The residents believed that hefty fines would deter riders from entering restricted areas.

In conclusion, the FCTA’s stance on prohibiting commercial motorcycle operations in the city remains firm. The enforcement of this ban is vital for maintaining security and order in Abuja. While some residents have raised objections to the crushing of impounded motorcycles, the government stands by its decision to crush them as a measure to uphold the law and ensure the safety of residents.
