The Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, has announced its intention to crush some of the over 130 impounded vehicles that failed integrity tests. Dr. Abdulateef Bello, the Director of the Department of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), made this statement after leading journalists on a tour of the impounded vehicles in various offices in Abuja. These vehicles will undergo standard verification processes for registration, roadworthiness, and other checks, with those falling below the minimum standards facing the possibility of being crushed.
Mr. Bello also mentioned that the owners of some impounded vehicles will be brought before mobile courts to pay penalties in accordance with the law. He further stated that certain vehicles will not be allowed back on the road and will be crushed after allowing the owners to retrieve any valuable items from them.
In cases where criminal activities were carried out under the guise of commercial operations, the perpetrators will be handed over to the police for prosecution. Mr. Bello revealed that a total of 130 vehicles were impounded in the past two weeks during evening raids, most of which were operating as commercial businesses while engaging in criminal activities.
The aim of these operations is to restore order and security in the city while ensuring smooth traffic flow in line with the current administration’s zero-tolerance policy for insecurity in the FCT. The DRTS will continue its efforts to remove substandard vehicles used for criminal activities from the city.
Mr. Bello also noted that the DRTS has made significant progress in reducing criminal activities related to “one chance” incidents in the FCT. Over the past month, efforts have been made to enforce regulations for taxi operators to conduct their businesses within designated parks rather than on the roads. Residents are advised against patronizing taxis and other vehicles that operate outside authorized areas.
In conclusion, the FCTA is committed to maintaining security and order in the Federal Capital Territory, and actions are being taken to eliminate vehicles used for criminal activities from the city. Through stringent enforcement measures and collaboration with law enforcement agencies, the administration aims to create a safer environment for residents and ensure the smooth flow of traffic in Abuja.
