In response to the circulating extracts from a book authored by Farida Waziri, former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, regarding the 1995 alleged coup during the Gen. Sani Abacha regime, a retired military officer and human rights lawyer, Col. Bello Fadile, has expressed his concerns.
In a statement issued on Monday, Mr. Fadile highlighted the inaccuracies in Mrs. Waziri’s book, “Farida Waziri: One Step Ahead,” particularly regarding his involvement in the events of the alleged coup. He expressed his concern over the misrepresentation of his role in what has been termed a phantom coup.
The former EFCC boss allegedly recalled how former Chief of Army Staff, “General Abdulrahman Dambazau, watched Obasanjo confidently rubbish the allegations leveled at him by Colonel Bello Fadile during the trial. However, Mr. Fadile stated that Mrs. Waziri was relating the events from her own limited understanding of what transpired, and there were gaps in the book due to the “narrow perspectives with limited information”.
Mr. Fadile, who is also a human rights lawyer, mentioned that he had given some of these accounts at the Oputa Panel and promised to tell his own side of the story and provide a more comprehensive account in his forthcoming book.
He emphasized the necessity of addressing these inaccuracies, especially considering his own involvement in the events mentioned. He stated that the portrayal of his role in the alleged coup, as depicted in Waziri’s book, is far from accurate and that the truth can be found in the proceedings of the Oputa Panel, where he provided his testimony, despite attempts by the government at the time to manipulate the proceedings.
Mr. Fadile also mentioned a project he referred to as the “Back to Barracks Campaign, which he believes deserves a fair and comprehensive exposé, and he intends to provide that in his forthcoming book, “Nine Lives: The Bello Fadile Memoirs.” He assured the public and all concerned individuals that the genuine and complete truth will be revealed soon in his upcoming book.
Overall, Mr. Fadile’s response is aimed at addressing the inaccuracies in the portrayal of his role in the alleged coup and providing a comprehensive account of the events in his forthcoming book. He seeks to set the record straight and ensure that the truth is revealed to the public and all concerned individuals. His commitment to addressing the misrepresentations through his own account highlights the importance of transparency and accuracy in historical narratives.
