The Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has issued a stern warning against impeding the lawful duties of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). In a statement released in Abuja, Mr. Fagbemi emphasized that the EFCC has the legal authority to summon any individual for questioning during their investigations, regardless of their status.
He stressed the importance of cooperating with the EFCC and not obstructing their work. Mr. Fagbemi expressed concern over public officials who attempt to obstruct the efforts of the EFCC, noting that such actions are unacceptable. He emphasized that evading the law will only worsen the situation and encouraged individuals to honor invitations from law enforcement agencies.
Mr. Fagbemi highlighted the importance of following the rule of law and seeking protection through the judicial system. He urged individuals who receive invitations from the EFCC or any other agency to respond with decency and civility, rather than resorting to self-help or evasion tactics. By cooperating with law enforcement agencies, individuals can avoid tarnishing the reputation of the country on the international stage.
The Minister emphasized the need for institutions of the state to function effectively and efficiently. He reassured the public that he would hold the EFCC and other agencies accountable for any violations of fundamental rights. Mr. Fagbemi reiterated his commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that the rights of all Nigerians are protected.
In response to the warning issued by the Minister, the EFCC reminded the public that obstructing officers of the Commission from carrying out their lawful duties is a criminal offense. According to the EFCC Establishment Act, it is punishable by a minimum jail term of five years to prevent EFCC officers from performing their duties. The Commission highlighted the increasing trend of individuals and groups under investigation resorting to illegal tactics, such as hiring thugs to hinder EFCC operations.
The EFCC acknowledged the challenges faced by its operatives when confronted with such obstacles and emphasized the importance of exercising restraint to maintain law and order. The Commission reiterated its commitment to upholding the law and carrying out its mandate to combat financial crimes in Nigeria.
In conclusion, it is essential for all individuals to respect the rule of law and cooperate with law enforcement agencies like the EFCC. By following legal procedures and honoring invitations, individuals can contribute to a transparent and accountable society. Any attempts to obstruct the work of law enforcement agencies will not only undermine their efforts but also jeopardize the integrity of the country’s justice system.
