The claim that Peter Gregory Obi bowed before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a supposed meeting in the presence of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Tinubu, and Obi’s political opponent has been disputed by a fact-checking platform. The claim was initially made by a prominent social media user, Ayekooto (@DeeOneAyekooto), who posted an image with the caption, “respect anyone who is greater than you.” The image depicted Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, bowing down before President Bola Tinubu.

The fact-checking platform, Dubawa, conducted an investigation into the claim and published its findings on Wednesday, April 3. After scrutinizing the picture, Dubawa concluded that the posted image was manipulated and misleading. The platform revealed that the picture uploaded by the social media user was a doctored copy from April 26, 2023, and not a representation of an actual meeting between the individuals involved.

The trio of Tinubu, Obi, and Kwankwaso are members of different political parties. Despite Kwankwaso and Obi’s initial intention to unite against Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2023 general election, an alliance did not materialize. The image created a stir on social media with 100 replies, 150+ reposts, and over 1,000 likes.

The fact-checking process highlighted the need to verify information before sharing it on social media platforms. In this case, the image was manipulated to create a false narrative that Peter Obi bowed before President Bola Tinubu. The platform’s findings serve as a reminder for social media users to exercise caution and critical thinking when consuming and sharing information online.

In a related report, Obi accused the federal government of plotting to persecute him for criticizing the ruling APC. Despite the alleged threats, Obi remained steadfast in his resolve to continue speaking out until a new Nigeria is born. The allegations raised by Obi shed light on the challenges faced by opposition figures in the Nigerian political landscape.

Overall, the fact-checking process conducted by Dubawa revealed the importance of verifying information and avoiding the spread of misinformation. In a digital age where information spreads rapidly, it is crucial for individuals to exercise discernment and critical thinking to avoid falling prey to manipulated content and false narratives.
