President Bola Tinubu was recently featured in a viral video where he allegedly promised to reduce the price of petrol to N100. This claim sparked a range of reactions from Nigerians, with some dismissing the video as fake while others believed in its authenticity. However, upon verification, it was discovered that the video was indeed manipulated and deep fake.
The alleged video, shared on March 5, 2024, by an X user, showed an individual imitating President Bola Tinubu. The caption accompanying the video stated, “By the end of August, fuel will be sold at N 100 per litre—Bola T, 2023.” This caused a stir online, with the post accumulating over 89,000 views, 200 comments, almost 700 reposts, and 100 bookmarks. The public response was divided, with some questioning the legitimacy of the video, while others believed in its credibility.
A fact-checking organization investigated the video, revealing several signs of manipulation. Tinubu’s lip movements did not sync with his usual speech patterns, and his facial expressions seemed unnatural. The tone of the speech in the video also appeared mechanical, indicating a high likelihood of it being a fake video.
To authenticate the video’s originality, deepware.ai, a verification tool, was utilized, confirming the video as fake due to numerous suspicious features. Despite the video’s falsity, it managed to generate a considerable amount of engagement and controversy online.
In response to the situation, Kashim Shettima, the vice president of Nigeria, urged Nigerians to continue praying for President Tinubu. Shettima emphasized the importance of citizens praying for their country’s leadership, acknowledging the challenging times facing Nigeria. However, he remained hopeful that the country would overcome its hurdles with the support of its people.
In conclusion, the video circulating online, claiming that President Bola Tinubu promised to reduce petrol prices to N100, has been debunked as fake. It serves as a reminder to the public to exercise caution and critical thinking when consuming information online. Additionally, the call for prayers for Nigeria’s leadership highlights the significance of unity and support in navigating challenging times.
