Anglican Priest, Ven Dr Ikechukwu Joseph Egbuonu from the Diocese of Niger in Anambra State has recently been elected as the bishop of the Oji River Diocese in Enugu State. He is joined by Venerable Owen Ukafia of the Diocese of Uyo, Ven Nuhu Yohannato from the Diocese of Katsina, and Ven Mathew Tamunotari Ogaze from the Diocese of Ogbia in this esteemed position. Ven Egbuonu is now the 2nd bishop of Oji Diocese since its establishment in 1999, following the retirement of the former pioneer Archbishop of Enugu ecclesiastical province, Archbishop Amos Madu.

The announcement of Ven Egbuonu’s election was made by the primate of the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion, Most Rev’d Henry Ndukuba, during the Church of Nigeria standing committee meeting in Delta State. He called upon members of the Church to pray for and support the newly elected bishops and their families as they prepare to take on their new responsibilities after consecration.

Ven Ikechukwu Joseph Egbuonu was born on September 30th, 1976, to the late Chief David and Mrs Rose Egbuonu of Uruagu, Umudioka in Dunukofia L.G.A of Anambra State. He is a graduate of Trinity Theological College in Umuahia and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, holding various certificates including Dip.Th, B.Th, BA, MA, and currently pursuing a Ph.D. in theology.

He was ordained as a Deacon in July 2007 and later as a priest in 2008 within the Diocese of Niger. Throughout his ministry, he has served in approximately seven parishes and currently holds the position of Vicar at Immanuel Anglican Church Parish in Nkwelle-Ezunaka, Anambra State.

His election as bishop signifies a significant milestone in his career, taking on a higher leadership role within the Anglican Communion. With his extensive education and experience, Ven Egbuonu is well-equipped to lead the Oji River Diocese and continue the legacy of his predecessors in serving the community with faith and dedication.

As he transitions into his new role, the support and prayers of the Church members will be crucial in helping him navigate the challenges and responsibilities that come with being a bishop. The Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion looks forward to witnessing Ven Ikechukwu Joseph Egbuonu’s contributions to the growth and development of the Oji River Diocese in Enugu State.
