Governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Mbah, has emphasized the importance of delivering high-quality projects that will stand the test of time in the state. He has charged contractors and site engineers responsible for constructing 260 smart schools and 260 Type-2 Primary Health facilities across the 260 wards of the state to adhere strictly to specifications and use quality materials in their work. Governor Mbah warned that any deviation from the standards set by the government would result in severe sanctions.
During an inspection tour of ongoing projects in Ezeagu LGA, the Governor’s message was conveyed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof Chidiebere Onyia. The inspection team, comprising key government officials and experts, including the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Commissioner for Education, Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Chairman of ENSUBEB, and the Special Adviser on Projects Development and Implementation, was tasked with ensuring the quality and integrity of the projects from start to finish.
The Governor’s aim is to prevent common risks associated with construction projects, such as variations in work specification, delays, and cost overruns. By closely monitoring the projects and engaging with local stakeholders to enhance security at the sites, the government hopes to ensure the successful completion and sustainability of the projects. The goal is to have well-equipped smart schools and healthcare facilities in all wards of Enugu State, supported by a strong monitoring team to oversee the projects’ progress.
To address concerns about abandoned projects in the past, Governor Mbah allocated a significant portion of the 2024 budget to education, guaranteeing the timely completion and handover of the smart school projects. The Chairman of ENSUBEB, Dr Gabriel Ajah, expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done so far and praised contractors for their compliance with specifications. He emphasized the importance of community ownership and urged residents to protect and secure the facilities to prevent vandalism.
In conclusion, the government’s focus is not only on monitoring and ensuring project completion but also on building a sustainable workforce and improving education in the state. By investing in infrastructure and engaging with local communities, Enugu State aims to create a conducive environment for smart children, teachers, and workers. The collaborative efforts of all stakeholders will be crucial in achieving these objectives and securing the future development of the state.
