The Sokoto Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, brought one Ibrahim Salisu Isah before Justice Bashar Ibrahim Tambuwal of the Sokoto State High Court sitting in Sokoto on Thursday, March 21, 2024. Isah faced a single charge of criminal breach of trust amounting to N7,110,000.00.
The charge detailed that Isah, an adult male, allegedly misappropriated the sum of N7,110,000.00 entrusted to him by Buhari Hammani Gumbi in November 2022. The money was meant for the purchase and supply of 1,800 bags of BUA cement at N3,950 per bag, but Isah allegedly used the funds for personal gain. This action constituted a violation of the trust placed in him, leading to the accusation of criminal breach of trust under Section 300 of the Sokoto State Penal Code Law, punishable under Section 301 of the same law.
Upon being arraigned, Isah pleaded not guilty to the charges levied against him. The prosecution counsel, S.H. Sa’ad, requested a trial date, while the defense counsel, Shamsu Dauda, sought bail for the accused. Sa’ad opposed the oral bail application, arguing that a formal affidavit was necessary for the defense’s request to be considered on record.
Justice Tambuwal scheduled the next hearing for April 23, 2024, and mandated a formal bail application. In the interim, Isah was remanded in the custody of the Correctional Services pending further proceedings.
The case exemplifies the EFCC’s commitment to combatting financial crimes and holding individuals accountable for breaching the trust placed in them. By prosecuting those who misuse entrusted funds, the EFCC aims to deter others from engaging in similar fraudulent activities.
As the legal process unfolds, it will be crucial to ensure due diligence in addressing the allegations against Isah. The court’s decision to require a formal bail application underscores the importance of following legal procedures meticulously to uphold justice and safeguard the rights of all parties involved.
Stay tuned for updates on this case as it progresses through the judicial system, highlighting the EFCC’s efforts to maintain integrity and transparency in financial dealings. The outcome of this trial will serve as a reminder of the consequences of betraying trust and misappropriating funds, underscoring the importance of accountability in all financial transactions.
