Olumide Akpata, the Gubernatorial aspirant of the Labour Party (LP) in the upcoming gubernatorial election in Edo State, has made it clear that he will not leave the party even if he is unfairly excluded from the primary election. In an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, the former president of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) expressed his commitment to the party and his belief in the process that will determine the party’s candidate.

Akpata acknowledged that there have been issues with the party’s primary election process in other states such as Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi. Despite these concerns, he emphasized his dedication to the Labour Party, stating that he is not interested in engaging in “political harlotry” and that he joined the party because he believes in its principles and objectives. He expressed his disappointment with any underhanded behavior by party operators but emphasized his commitment to working within the party to address such issues.

Addressing concerns about his lack of support from the party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 election, Peter Obi, Akpata explained that he does not expect Obi to endorse any specific candidate from the 28 aspirants in the gubernatorial race. He described Obi as a fair and just leader who would wait for the process to play out before making any endorsements. Despite not having Obi’s explicit support, Akpata expressed confidence that Obi would endorse the candidate who emerges through the proper channels.

Akpata’s stance on remaining loyal to the Labour Party, even in the face of potential unfair treatment, reflects his commitment to democratic principles and his belief in the party’s values. He made it clear that his priority is to ensure that the leadership of the party aligns with its objectives, rather than jumping ship to another party.

The firmness of Akpata’s position demonstrates his determination to address any issues within the party internally and work towards improving the overall process. This approach is in line with his belief in the democratic process and his refusal to engage in opportunistic behavior.

Overall, Akpata’s interview conveys his steadfast commitment to the Labour Party and his willingness to navigate potential challenges within the party while upholding democratic principles and fair play. His determination to stay true to his party, regardless of the outcome of the primary election, reinforces his integrity and dedication to the political process.
