The Edo State House of Assembly made headlines on Monday as they impeached the State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu. This decision came after the adoption of the recommendation of a seven-man judicial panel led by Justice Stephen Omonua (retd.). During the plenary session in Benin, the Majority Leader of the house, Charity Aiguobarueghian, announced that the report presented to the house found Shaibu guilty of disclosing government secrets.

While the panel was unable to establish the case of perjury against the deputy governor, they made two findings and one recommendation. According to Mr. Aiguobarueghian, “the seven-man judicial panel of inquiry recommended that the deputy governor be impeached on the ground of disclosure of government secrets.” This recommendation formed the basis for the decision to impeach the deputy governor.

When it came time to vote on the motion, 18 out of the 19 members present at the plenary voted in favor of the impeachment, with one member abstaining from the voting process. The Clerk of the House, Yahaya Omogbai, conducted a head count to confirm the votes for and against the impeachment. It was determined that the house had met the required 2/3 majority (16 members) needed to carry out the impeachment.

Following this confirmation, the assembly upheld and approved the recommendation of the seven-man panel, leading to the impeachment of the deputy governor. The Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, instructed the Clerk of the House to forward copies of the impeachment to Governor Godwin Obaseki for assent.

This turn of events marks a significant development in Edo State politics and has raised questions about the circumstances leading to the impeachment of the Deputy Governor. It remains to be seen how this decision will impact the political landscape in the state and whether there will be any further ramifications.

Overall, the impeachment of Philip Shaibu by the Edo State House of Assembly is a notable event that highlights the complexities and dynamics of politics in the state. It underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in government operations and serves as a reminder of the need for public officials to uphold the trust placed in them by the people. Only time will tell how this impeachment will shape the future of Edo State and its governance.
