The Enugu State Governorship candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Chijioke Edeoga, has expressed strong condemnation of the arrest of the National Chairman of the party, Comrade Julius Abure. Edeoga criticized the action of the police, describing it as an abuse of rights and suggested that it was an attempt to undermine the party’s prospects in the forthcoming governorship contest in Edo State.

In a statement personally signed by Edeoga, he decried the public humiliation to which Comrade Abure was subjected during the arrest. He demanded greater respect for Abure, highlighting his leadership role and the millions of Labour Party members he represents across the country.

The Edo State Police Command’s approach to enforcing the arrest was met with criticism from Edeoga, who expressed dismay at the treatment of Comrade Abure, emphasizing that he was not formally invited before the arrest. Edeoga went as far as to suggest that the allegations against Abure were a deliberate attempt to intimidate and diminish his position and office before the Nigerian populace.

Edeoga also took issue with the description of Comrade Abure as a “factional Chairman of the Labour Party” by the Edo State Police Command and certain sections of the media. He pointed out that the Supreme Court of Nigeria had affirmed Abure as the undisputed National Chairman of the party, discrediting the claims made against him.

The Labour Party leader in Enugu State raised concerns about potential bias against the party by certain state institutions ahead of the election. He urged security agencies to provide a level playing field for all participants to ensure peace, justice, and fairness.

Calling on President Bola Tinubu to caution the Nigerian Police and security agencies against biased actions, Edeoga emphasized their responsibility to provide security for all citizens and treat everyone equally regardless of party affiliation. He urged President Tinubu to promote inclusive governance and demonstrate sportsmanship in political contests for the betterment of the people.

It is important to note that Abure was arrested in Benin city, Edo State, and was eventually released late in the night. The events surrounding his arrest have raised significant concerns and prompted strong reactions from within the Labour Party.

Edeoga’s statement shed light on the perceived mistreatment of Comrade Abure and emphasized the need for fairness and justice in the political process. The incident has drawn attention to the role of law enforcement in ensuring a level playing field for all political parties and candidates. The interaction between law enforcement and political leaders is a significant aspect of the democratic process, and it is essential to uphold the principles of fairness and respect for all individuals involved.
