Yoruba nation activist Chief Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, made a passionate plea on Monday to the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu. He also urged that the treasonable charges against Kanu be dropped so that he could receive proper medical attention for his deteriorating health.
In a widely circulated video on social media, Adeyemo emphasized that Kanu, like himself fighting for the interest of the South West, was merely an agitator seeking to address the concerns of the people in the South East region. He pleaded, “Please release Nnamdi Kanu, stop politics. This guy did not do anything. Today is February 26, 2024. Release him, let him go and stay with his family. This guy is just fighting for his people in the South East like me that I am fighting for my people in Yoruba land, release him, let him go. Release Kanu. Please release him.”
The counsel for Kanu, Aloy Ejimakor, highlighted the urgent need for proper medical attention for his client, who is suffering from heart disease. Ejimakor expressed concerns that the medical facilities within the Department of State Security Service (DSS) where Kanu is detained are inadequate for his condition, leading to a deterioration in his health. He stressed the importance of moving Kanu to a standard hospital where he can receive the necessary medical care.
On the other hand, the prosecuting team led by Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) argued that the DSS has the required medical facilities to attend to Kanu’s health needs. However, Ejimakor countered this claim by stating that the medical reports and assessments conducted on Kanu suggested otherwise, emphasizing the urgent need for proper medical treatment.
The presiding judge, Justice Binta Nyako, postponed the ruling on the bail application for Kanu until March 19, 2024, allowing for further deliberation on the matter.
The plea from Sunday Igboho reflects a growing concern for the well-being of Nnamdi Kanu and the need for compassion and prompt medical attention. As the legal proceedings continue, the call for justice and humane treatment for Kanu persists among supporters and activists advocating for his release. It remains to be seen how the authorities will respond to these appeals and ensure the health and safety of Nnamdi Kanu during this challenging time.
