The Cross River state government has made a heartfelt plea to the newly graduated nursing students of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), urging them not to seek opportunities abroad but rather use their expertise to serve in the local health sector. This message was delivered by Henry Ayuk, the commissioner for Health in Cross River, during the Induction and Oath-taking ceremony of 229 UNICAL graduates into the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, held in Calabar.

Mr. Ayuk highlighted the urgent need for nursing professionals in the state, revealing that many nurses in the state’s service would retire later in the year, creating vacancies that would require new recruits. He assured the graduates that the state would readily employ healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and medical laboratory scientists.

Addressing the graduates, Mr. Ayuk emphasized the importance of the nursing profession in enhancing the well-being of the community. He urged them not to seek opportunities abroad, encouraging them to stay and contribute to the local healthcare system. Despite acknowledging that the conditions of service may not be ideal, he assured them that efforts were being made to improve the situation.

Florence Obi, the vice-chancellor of the University of Calabar, also spoke at the event, emphasizing the importance of professionalism and ethical conduct in the nursing profession. She reminded the graduates of their duty to serve humanity and uphold the ethical standards of their profession. She warned them that any violation of their oath could result in the revocation of their license.

Josephine Bassey, chairperson of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Cross River Chapter, congratulated the graduates and urged them to work diligently once they secure employment. The event also featured the presentation of awards to Madu Onyedikachi, the best graduate with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.52.

In conclusion, the Cross River state government, the University of Calabar, and other stakeholders in the healthcare sector have called upon the new nursing graduates to stay and serve the local community. They emphasized the significance of professionalism, ethical conduct, and dedication in fulfilling their roles as healthcare professionals. The graduates were encouraged to make a positive impact in the healthcare sector and uphold the values of their profession. Through these efforts, they can contribute to the well-being of the community and make a difference in the lives of the people they serve.
