The Delta state government has confirmed four cases of Lassa fever in the state and is urging residents to take preventive measures to curb the spread of the disease. The state commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, revealed this in Asaba, listing the affected local government areas as Okpe, Oshimili North, Oshimili South, and Ndokwa East council areas. Emergency Operation Centers have been set up across the state to monitor the situation and raise awareness among residents.

In his address to the press, Dr. Onojaeme noted that there have been four confirmed cases of Lassa fever in week 12, with a fatality rate of 50%. While the general fatality rate for Lassa fever ranges from 1% to 15%, efforts are being made to prevent transmission from patients to healthcare workers and relatives. Measures include advocacy to healthcare workers and sensitization of residents to be vigilant and suspicious of potential cases.

The state government is collaborating with Irrua Specialist Hospital in Edo State to expedite testing and results for Lassa fever within 24 hours, compared to the typical 72-hour timeframe. Dr. Mildred Igumbor, the State Epidemiologist, emphasized the importance of collective action to eliminate the disease, considering one case of Lassa fever an outbreak. A multi-sectorial Emergency Operation Center has been established to coordinate efforts with various stakeholders and experts to combat the disease.

Dr. Igumbor highlighted the mode of transmission of Lassa fever through contact with rat feces or urine on food, stressing the importance of preventing rats from contaminating food sources. Residents are urged to be vigilant and seek medical attention if they experience symptoms of fever, as not all cases are attributed to malaria. Health workers are advised to maintain a high index of suspicion and conduct tests for suspected cases promptly for proper management.

The Isolation Center at the Federal Medical Center in Asaba, constructed by the State Government, can accommodate and manage confirmed cases of Lassa fever. If necessary, patients may be transferred to Irrua Specialist Hospital in Edo State for further treatment. The state government is taking proactive measures to prevent the spread of the disease and ensure the safety and well-being of residents.

In conclusion, the government is committed to containing the outbreak of Lassa fever in Delta state through coordinated efforts, public awareness campaigns, and efficient healthcare practices. Residents are encouraged to maintain cleanliness, prevent rodent infestation, and seek medical attention promptly if they suspect any symptoms related to Lassa fever. By working together and following preventive measures, the community can effectively control the spread of the disease and protect public health.
