The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has made a decision to have Umar Damagum continue as the Acting National Chairman of the party until the election of a new chairman in August. This decision was announced by the chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State after the 98th NEC meeting in Abuja.

Governor Mohammed emphasized the importance of leadership responsibilities and mentioned that the party is expected to come out of its congresses within the next two months. He assured that the leadership transition will be done in accordance with the party’s constitution and guidelines without any disputes.

Mr. Damagum also expressed that party leadership should not be a matter of life or death and that he is willing to serve in any capacity within the party as long as he remains a member. Additionally, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, stated that the issue of the party’s leadership, specifically Damagum’s role, will be revisited during the next NEC meeting scheduled for August 15.

During the meeting, Mr. Ologunagba read the communique which encouraged all party organs, leaders, stakeholders, and members to unite, set aside their differences, and work together towards repositioning and returning the PDP to power. The NEC also approved the timetable for the party’s congresses nationwide, reconstituted the Party Disciplinary and Reconciliation Committees, and extended the life of the Party Constitution Amendment Committee.

Furthermore, the NEC commended the efforts of the National Working Committee in rebranding the party, including the introduction of a new PDP logo. The committee urged all party members to collaborate for the success of the PDP and the benefit of Nigerians, emphasizing the importance of sustaining democracy in the country.

In addition to internal matters, the NEC advised President Bola Tinubu to convene a special National Security Council meeting to address the current security challenges facing Nigeria. They also recommended that Tinubu restructure his economic team with individuals of integrity and competence to help improve the country’s economy.

The meeting was attended by notable figures such as former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, members of the National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, serving governors, and lawmakers. The NEC’s decisions and recommendations reflect the party’s dedication to unity, good governance, and the well-being of the Nigerian people.
