The ongoing crisis in the Rivers Assembly shows no sign of stopping, even after Governor Fubara’s recent efforts to bring peace to the state. On Wednesday, the High Court in FCT issued a warrant for the arrest of Fubara’s chief of staff, Edison Ehie, over the burning of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex. However, the Rivers State High Court quickly countered this decision with an order in favor of Ehie.

The order came following a motion ex-parte filed by Edison Ehie, who sought to prevent the police from arresting him over his alleged involvement in the burning of the Hallowed Chambers of the Rivers State House of Assembly in 2023, as reported by Channels TV. The matter has been adjourned to February 6 for a hearing of the substantive application.

The incident in question occurred on Sunday night, October 29, 2023, when an explosion rocked the Rivers State House of Assembly complex. This incident took place amid alleged moves by some lawmakers to impeach Governor Sim Fubara, and eventually led to the demolition of the state assembly by the Rivers Government.

The crisis has also led to political maneuvering, with the Martin Amaewhule-led group petitioning the police to arrest, investigate, and prosecute Edison Ehie over his alleged involvement in the suspected arson at the House of Assembly Complex. Furthermore, a senior lawyer has warned that Fubara risks impeachment if he does not proceed with caution.

In a separate development, Fubara recently made peace with his predecessor, Wike, who made a significant impact on the political landscape in Rivers State. This decision has had significant implications for the ongoing political crisis in Rivers state, including the re-appointment of commissioners who had resigned during the crisis.

In a related development, Governor Siminalayi Fubara recently swore in nine re-nominated commissioners who had earlier resigned. The ceremony was conducted at the state Executive Council Chambers of the Government House in Port Harcourt, and the new commissioners took oaths at once, beginning from the oath of allegiance to the oath of office.

Despite these efforts, the crisis in the Rivers Assembly continues to dominate the political landscape in the state. The conflict between Fubara and Wike, as well as the involvement of Edison Ehie in the burning of the House of Assembly, have created an environment of tension and uncertainty in the state.

As the legal battles continue and the political crisis deepens, the people of Rivers State are left to navigate the complex and ever-changing political landscape. The decisions and actions of the government, as well as the legal proceedings, will continue to be closely watched in the coming days and weeks.
