The political landscape in Kano State has been shaken by the ongoing rivalry between the current governor, Abba Yusuf, and his predecessor, Abdullahi Ganduje. This rivalry took a new turn recently when a Kano State High Court affirmed Ganduje’s suspension as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The court issued an ex parte order confirming Ganduje’s suspension and restraining him from acting as the National Chairman or a member of the party. It also instructed Ganduje to refrain from overseeing any affairs of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC.

The suspension of Ganduje was initiated by two executive members of the APC Ganduje ward, Dawakin-Tofa local government area. The suspension was prompted by a petition alleging corruption against Ganduje, which was submitted by a member of the party. This led to the suspension of Ganduje by the ward’s legal adviser, Haliru Gwanzo, who accused Ganduje of gross misconduct and misappropriation of public funds during his time as governor of Kano. The suspension was intended to allow Ganduje to address the corruption allegations and clear his name.

However, the suspension was met with resistance from the Kano State Working Committee (SWC) of the APC, which deemed it illegal and nullified the suspension. The APC national headquarters in Abuja also affirmed Ganduje as the party’s National Chairman, dismissing the suspension as a criminal act carried out by impersonators within the party.

The legal battle surrounding Ganduje’s suspension escalated further with the Kano High Court affirming the suspension, leading to uncertainty and fear in Kano. The state government sought to arraign Ganduje on charges of bribery and misappropriation of funds, but the arraignment was stalled due to the government’s inability to serve the necessary documents.

The corruption allegations against Ganduje are not new, with previous accusations of bribery and fraud during his tenure as governor. The Kano State Anti-Corruption and Public Complaints Commission announced new corruption charges against Ganduje, including allegations of diverting funds and engaging in maladministration.

In response to the suspension and legal challenges, Ganduje accused the state government of orchestrating the suspension as a means to deprive President Bola Tinubu of Kano votes in the upcoming election. He claimed that the allegations against him were politically motivated and aimed at tarnishing his reputation.

The political turmoil in Kano has brought to the forefront the power struggles within the APC and the allegations of corruption that continue to plague Ganduje. As the legal battle unfolds, the future of the APC in Kano remains uncertain, with the rivalry between Ganduje and Yusuf adding further complexity to the political landscape in the state.
